Laos

Lao People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. It has an estimated population of 6.8 million inhabitants. It is bordered by Burma and People's Republic of China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. 

 

Laos is a communist single-party socialist republic and has a 115-seat National Assembly, with members elected by secret ballot for five-year terms. Lao People's Revolutionary Party is the only legal political party. The president is the head of state while, the head of government is the prime minister. Lieutenant General Choummaly Sayasone was elected the president of Laos on June 8, 2006. On December 23, 2010 Thongsing Thammavong was elected the prime minister of the country. 

 

The GDP of the country is 6.341 billion dollars. Subsistence agriculture accounts for half of the GDP, and provides 80% of the employment.

 

The country imports petroleum and gas and is rich in mineral resources. It exports large quantities of hydroelectric energy. The most famous product of the country is the beverage, Beerlao, which is exported to various countries, including Cambodia and Vietnam.
